These days, I keep hearing about Pudgy Penguins, and at first, I just thought it was a cute penguin NFT.
But upon closer look, I found the project's journey really fascinating.
Launched on Ethereum in July 2021, Pudgy Penguins hasn't had an entirely smooth ride from the start.
It began with 8,888 unique cartoon penguins, but when allegations surfaced that the original founders misappropriated funds, the project faced a crisis.
The community stepped in and decided to replace the team, and in early 2022, Luca Netz acquired the project for 750 ETH, setting a new direction.
With the new team, the strategy completely changed.
They shifted from a simple NFT project to building a global brand.
They launched a toy line (selling over 750k units in 7 months) and also created a metaverse platform called Pudgy World.
They attached QR codes to the toys to connect digital and physical worlds, which was quite a creative approach.
The most interesting part is the recent developments.
CEO Luca Netz launched the PENGU token on the Solana chain, with a total supply of 88.9 billion tokens.
Interestingly, 25.9% of the tokens are allocated to Pudgy Penguins ecosystem members, and 24.12% are airdropped to the broader community.
Since listing on December 17 last year, the current price is around $0.01, with a 24-hour volatility of about -2.53%.
The circulating market cap is approximately $630 million.
Throughout this process, Pudgy Penguins has completely broken free from the typical NFT project mold.
Its animated GIF views have reached 13.8 billion, Instagram followers exceed 1.23 million, and TikTok views surpass 750k.
They’ve also actively hosted offline events to grow the brand’s influence.
Their future plans look ambitious.
They are building an in-house chain called Abstract and are preparing a developer incubator.
Led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, they’ve invested $11 million.
They also launched OverpassIP, an IP licensing platform that pays royalties to NFT holders.
What impresses me most is that this project isn’t just about technological innovation.
Elements like cute characters, the fusion of digital and physical, and community-driven decision-making work together organically, helping it grow into a true global brand.
The price movement from a low of 1 ETH to around 17.9 ETH now also reflects market confidence.
Pudgy Penguins’ ultimate goal is clear.
To become the iconic penguin brand worldwide and a leading mascot in the crypto space.
I believe they are already quite close to achieving that goal.
Their approach, combining technology, culture, and community power, is demonstrating new possibilities within the Web3 ecosystem.
